Quirky places are often the brainchild of one unique individual. Sometimes their vision overflows and is joined by neighbors and friends. I like to look for the outsider artists as well as the small unique cultures that make the world really interesting.
Artists come from all around to add to the artwork on the walls of the River Arts District. When will Banksy come? http://www.streetartbio.com/banksy
Food Trip is a great way to create your leisurely ride about. The Road Trip, U.S.A. is iconic. So is the food. American road trips will be fossil fuel dinosaurs like car races soon enough. Pack 6 friends into the 1960's convertible and take it slow. https://roadfood.com/
Since the early 1980s, Pearl Fryar has created fantastic topiary at his garden in Bishopville, South Carolina. Living sculptures, Pearl’s topiary are astounding feats of artistry and horticulture. Many of the plants in Pearl’s garden were rescued from the compost pile at local nurseries. With Pearl’s patience and skilled hands, these “throw aways” have thrived and have been transformed into wonderful abstract shapes.
The yard belongs to Jim Bowsher, self-described "master" of the Temple. He has taken 25 years to build it. The Temple and its satellite shrines occupy all of the space behind Jim's home -- and that's a lot of space, because Jim owns the entire center of the block, roughly equal to about two dozen Wapakoneta back yards. It's unexpected and well-hidden; people driving past Jim's front door on Wood Street probably don't even know it's back there.
It will take a road trip to get there. look around the neighborhood as well. The Garden of Eden is a turn of the century Folk Art environment, built by S.P. Dinsmoor. Three story concrete structures illustrate a Garden of Eden story, as well as Populist Party Politics.
Opened in 1804, with over 69,000 ornate tombs and more than 1 million people buried there, Cimetière du Père Lachaise is often described as a 44-hectare sculpture garden. As the final resting place for the likes of Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison and Édith Piaf, it is also one of the most-visited cemeteries in the world.
At some point, somebody will do a Google map of Yard Art. Hopefully we can contribute to it.
